The line

Is a refresh the right call?

A refresh keeps the structure you already have and makes it work. Most of the time that is the right job, at a third of the cost of starting again. Sometimes it isn't, and you should know which side of the line you are on before you spend anything.

Refresh is right for you

Good bones, tired surface

The structure works and the content sits roughly where it should. It just looks and performs like it was built three years ago. This is exactly what a refresh is for.

Slow rather than broken

Load times, Core Web Vitals and unoptimised images are fixable without touching the architecture. A refresh handles this well.

A refresh won't fix this

The structure is the problem

If people cannot find what they came for, or the site was organised around a business you no longer run, no amount of visual work fixes it. That is a custom build, and I will tell you so.

You have outgrown the plan

Some things cannot be done on Squarespace Basic at any price. If that is what is holding the site back, the fix is the plan, not the design.

What gets refreshed

Where the biggest gains usually are

Visual Design Upgrade

Typography, spacing, colour, and layout brought up to current standards.

Performance Optimisation

Faster load times, improved Core Web Vitals, image optimisation. A slow site loses visitors before they've read a word. This fixes that.

SEO & AI Search Improvements

Meta data, schema markup, heading hierarchy, and AI search visibility reviewed and corrected. The same SEO foundation work that goes into a custom build, applied to an existing site. More visibility in Google and AI search.

Mobile Responsiveness

Mobile layout reviewed and rebuilt where needed. Over half the visitors to most SME sites are on a phone, so the mobile experience matters as much as the desktop one. Sometimes more.

Content Reorganisation

Navigation and page structure reviewed for clarity. Good content buried in the wrong place underperforms, and sometimes reorganising is all it takes.

Feature Enhancements

Forms, integrations, and functionality improved where needed. A broken contact form, a missing booking integration, an analytics setup that was never finished. The kind of issues that cost you enquiries until someone fixes them.

How it works

The assessment process

Free Site Review

I review the current site and write up what's working, what isn't, and what would have the biggest impact. The assessment is free and there's no obligation. If a refresh isn't the right answer, I'll say so.

Scope & Quote

Based on the review, I'll outline what the refresh covers and what it costs. The scope and price are fixed at the start. The price doesn't move unless the scope does.

Refresh

Work carried out on a staging version of the site, so the live site stays untouched until everything is ready. You'll review the staging site before anything goes live.

Launch & Handover

Refreshed site goes live. Video walkthrough covering what changed, what's new, and how to manage the updates going forward. After launch, the refreshed site is yours to run.

  • Good content that's underperforming because of how it's presented

FAQ

Common questions

How do I know if my site needs a refresh or a full rebuild?

It depends on the current state of the site. If the underlying structure is sound and the issues are mostly visual, performance, or content presentation, a refresh is the right answer. If the site's structure itself is the problem, like bad navigation, fundamentally broken architecture, or a platform that doesn't fit the business, a full custom build makes more sense. The free site review is where this gets decided. I'll tell you which one your situation needs.

My site was built by someone else. Can you still work on it?

Yes, often. Whether you outgrew your previous designer, built it yourself and hit a wall, or just haven't had time to keep on top of it, I can pick up an existing Squarespace site and improve it. The site needs to be on Squarespace already. If it's on another platform, the refresh service doesn't apply, but a custom build might.

Do you only work on Squarespace?

Primarily, yes. It's the platform I know inside out and where I do my best work. For the right project, I'll consider other platforms case by case. If you're not on Squarespace, send me your URL and I'll tell you honestly whether it's a fit.

What usually makes the biggest difference in a refresh?

Layout and page structure, every time. Get the structure right and the visual work has something solid to sit on. Get the structure wrong and no amount of visual polish will rescue it. Most refreshes spend more time on layout than people expect, and it's where the visible improvement actually comes from.

Will a refresh help me get more traffic?

A refresh can identify and fix the technical issues that are actively holding traffic back. Broken SEO fundamentals, missing metadata, poor page structure and slow load times that hurt rankings. What a refresh won't do is replace a dedicated SEO strategy, content marketing, or backlink work. It clears the technical blockers so the rest of your marketing has something to work with.

How much does a site refresh cost?

Starting at £1,500. A design refresh covering visual and layout improvements is £1,500. A complete overhaul covering design, SEO, performance, and content runs £1,800 to £2,200. The free site review is where scope and price get agreed, before any work starts.

Is a Squarespace refresh the same as a website redesign?

Roughly, yes. The difference is depth. A site refresh keeps the existing structure and improves what's there: design, performance, SEO, content presentation. A full website redesign rebuilds it from the ground up, which is what the Custom Build service covers. If the site has good bones but a tired feel, a refresh is the right call. If the underlying structure is the problem, a custom build is.
