The distinction

This isn't maintenance

Squarespace already does maintenance. Security patching, hosting, uptime and platform updates come with your subscription and I do not charge you for them. The retainer covers the work that only happens if somebody actually sits down and does it.

Search visibility

Rankings and AI search results move on an on-going basis whether or not anyone is watching. Keeping pace with that is ongoing work, not a one-off setup.

Performance that stays fixed

Core Web Vitals drift as content is added. Regular attention keeps the numbers where they were when the site launched.

Work that would not otherwise happen

New pages, new features, custom development. The things that stay on a list indefinitely unless someone has hours allocated to them.

What you are not paying for

Security, hosting, backups and platform updates are Squarespace's job and they do it well. If your site is genuinely fine and just needs the lights kept on, you do not need this.

What's available

What your retainer hours cover

SEO & AI Search Optimisation

Ongoing improvements to both traditional search rankings and AI-powered search visibility. The way people find businesses online is changing, and the SEO that worked two years ago isn't the SEO that works now. The retainer keeps the site current.

Advanced Development

Custom functionality, new features, integrations, and technical improvements built on top of the existing foundation. Squarespace can do more than most people think, and the retainer is where that capability gets used.

Performance Improvements

Ongoing monitoring and improvements to load speed, Core Web Vitals, and Lighthouse scores. Performance isn't a one-time fix. New images get added, new pages go live, and Squarespace itself updates. The retainer keeps performance from drifting back.

Monthly Performance Reviews

Regular check-ins on how the site is performing across traffic, rankings, Core Web Vitals, and conversion signals. The reviews are short and useful, focused on what to do next rather than what's already happened.

Strategic Consultation

Senior input on improvements, new opportunities, and the things that come up as the business changes. A second opinion from someone who already knows the site inside out.

Content Updates

Keeping the site fresh, accurate, and aligned with where the business is now. New service pages, updated copy, fresh imagery, all handled without you needing to log in.

How it works

Simple by design

Onboarding

I get full access to the site and a clear picture of the priorities. An Asana project gets set up so you can see what's being worked on, what's coming next, and what's been completed.

Monthly Planning

Each month we agree where the hours go. A specific project, ongoing SEO, performance work, content updates, or a mix of all of them. The priorities are yours to set, and they can shift month to month as the business changes.

Ongoing Work

Work happens throughout the month. Urgent requests get same-day attention where I can. You get updates when things are done, rather than a stream of questions you don't have time to answer.

Monthly Review

End-of-month summary covering what was done, how the site is performing, and what's recommended for the next month.

FAQ

Common questions

Who is a retainer best suited for?

Businesses that want the site to keep improving after launch. New features, better search rankings, ongoing performance work, content updates, or a mix. The retainer suits anyone who wants senior input without hiring in-house, and it can be as hands-on or hands-off as you want it to be.

How does the work get agreed each month?

Everything is managed through Asana. I set up a project, invite you in, and outline tasks and suggestions. You can add your own requests, upload screenshots of things you want changed, and see what's being worked on at any time. Hours are estimated per task and agreed before any work starts.

What kind of work can retainer hours be used for?

Development of new features, SEO and AI search improvements, performance optimisation, content updates, strategic consultation, or a mix of all of them. Each month we agree where the hours are best spent based on the current priorities and what's budgeted.

How do you keep track of time and budget?

All time is logged and tracked, and you're kept informed throughout the month. There are no surprise invoices. Estimates are agreed upfront per task, so you always know what you're committing to before work begins.

Is there a minimum contract or lock-in period?

No minimum commitment and no lock-in. The retainer runs month to month, with the first month's hours agreed at the start. If it's working, it continues. If it isn't, it ends. Either way the budget stays in your control.

Is this a website maintenance retainer or something more?

This is something more. Squarespace handles the standard maintenance work (security patches, hosting, platform updates) as part of the platform itself, so the retainer isn't there to babysit. It's there to keep the site improving after launch. New pages, SEO work, performance tuning, custom development. If the site is genuinely fine and just needs the lights kept on, you don't need this. If you want it to keep getting better, this is the service.
